Dickens, Charles. A Tale Of Two Cities, Harmondsworth, Middlesex, England: Penguin Books 1991 (first published in 1859), 93 pages

Responding to the plot:
If I were in the story, I would make the story different by not going to London but to the farther place. I say so because of the real reason Charles went back to France. He was deceived because he was a French noble. If he was not at London which is near from Paris, that information took a long time to be known by him and he wouldn’t go back there. I can say the same thing to the question “What would I change if I was the author?”

In the page 37, Lucie says “Are you ill, Mr. Carton? ” I think that word shows the personality of her.

Setting:
This story takes place at two cities. These are London and Paris. Also the year starts from 1775.

Point of view:
This story is written by the third person’s view. There are sentences which are able to know what the characters are thinking, but these are by what the characters said.

Conflict:
I think there are two conflicts in this story. Firstly there is a conflict between Charles and his position as a noble. Secondly, there is a conflict between Sydney and Charles – which can marry Lucie.

Climax:
I think the climax of this story is the part which Sydney gets death penalty instead of Charles. He gets it so as not to make Lucie sad.

Symbol:
The symbol of this story is the position of Charles. He was a noble.

Irony:
This story’s irony is the part which Sydney gets death penalty instead of Charles. I can’t do such a thing if I were at Sydney’s place.

Themes:
I think themes of this story are about the position in the social life. The three main characters’ positions are noble, barrister, and a daughter of the Doctor.

Reflecting On The Story
I found that the climax part is very surprising. As I wrote before, I can’t do such a thing if I was Sydney. Also, the characters life is different from mine. In addition, environment is different, too comparing to my country. Besides, if I make this story to a film, I will make it as more love story.

I think the reason why he wrote this story is because of his love. Wikipedia said that “Some have argued that in Tale Dickens reflects on his recently begun affair with eighteen-year-old actress Ellen Ternan.” I agree with his opinion because sometimes, we get estimation by social position. I learned it is important to help people even if that one is a competitor of me. That is also what I learned from the book. And that thing is also what I got surprised what it really happened and what I expect to happen.
