Source (in MLA style) Oakland Puts Crime Statistics Maps On the Internet. CNN. San Francisco. Oct 2004

Describe it…

- There was a shooting between police officer and a criminal. - Such things do not often reported by the news. The people in Oakland, however, will be able to know that news by using the Internet.

The mayor of Oakland looks at this Internet site. He is promoting this project – although it costs quarter million dollars. From this project, people and police can find out about the crimes and they can do something to the criminals – for example, stop it.

The marks on this map show the kinds of the criminal. For example, a red star is for a homicide. A green star is for assault. The red circles are for armed robbery. A light green star is for a forcible rape. An orange circle stands for the child is for abuse. The purple triangles are car thefts.

You can get more facts by clicking the maps, and you can also read the police report. This is powerful information because you can decide not to buy a house in the neighborhood or to make the neighborhood safe. The police say that they want to work as partners to make it safer for all. The major says the whole plan is to work with the police to fight crime.

Report what you thought or how you felt about it. Was it easy for you to do? Did you have any frustrations or feelings of satisfaction?

I think it is good to know about the safety of the neighbors, but I can’t understand why doing this is useful for decreasing the numbers of the crimes.

I had some trouble typing it, but otherwise it was easy.

Should Hunting Be Banned?

Today, there are lots of opinions about hunting animals. For example, some say that people shouldn’t hunt animals to protect animals and the nature. They also say that hunting is a way to get weapons easily, and these weapons cause accidents such as murder. But, hunting helps people’s life in many ways, from the Stone Age to Today. Should hunting really have to be banned? As written on this paper, hunting helps people life. At present, hunting should not be banned, but hunters should know some about the dangers of hunting.

Many things have good points and bad points, and so does hunting. Firstly, some hunters use their hunting tools not for hunting but as to kill people. On December 14, 2007, a hunter in Sasebo, Nagasaki killed two people and injured six by using his gun. Even though the article of The Kobe Shimbun Japanese version says “The behavior of the man was unusual since he got the license of holding guns.”, this kind of accident – a man who got a gun legally using it for killing people – had not happened in Japan before, and because this accident was very shocking, some people say that hunting should be banned.

Next, metals - especially lead - used in the bullets harm nature. For example, hunters use bullets that are made of lead when they hunt deer. Usually, that wouldn’t be a problem, but it becomes a problem when they leave the part that the bullets hit at the hunting place. Japanese version of Wikipedia says “If birds eat that, they –especially eagles –get lead poisoning.”

A third thing is the problem about protecting animals. If the human race kills faster than animals born, it will die out. Dying out is the worst thing, and it is also true that nature balance will be damaged. If nature balance was damaged, than it causes serious problems to the Earth.

There are good parts about hunting, however. For example, some animals – such as bears and deer ― eat farm products. Therefore, food that people eat will be damaged. To protect from animals, hunting is one way.

Secondly, some animals harm human beings. Bears are good example. To protect people from these kinds of animals, one way is to hunt and decrease the number of them. Also, people get a lot of things from animals. For example, humans eat meat – pork, beef, chicken, fish etc – as a meal, plus, their fur is used in what humans wear.

Taking these reasons into consideration, it is bad to ban hunting. However, hunters must know the dangerous part of hunting. Also, people should know that man-made things such as bullets can change nature rapidly.

Sightseeing Spots in Asahikawa

Asahikawa, the city which is located in Hokkaido has a lot of sightseeing spots. Since this town was founded in 1890, this city has been developing as a city which anyone is able to enjoy. I will explain some of it.

Probably one of the most famous sightseeing spot is Asahiyama zoo. This zoo is located in the northernmost of Japan, and it was opened in 1967. Asahiyama zoo became famous because of its way how they exhibit their animals. Although most zoos have its main animals (for example, giant panda in Ueno zoo or koala in Higasiyama zoo in Nagoya) this zoo’s main animals are animals which are in this zoo. For example, they show how penguins swim in the water from under the penguins, how polar bears dives into the water, and etc.

For boys and girls who like literature, I want to recommend Ayako Miura literature museum. She is a writer who writes about her Christian religious life and is from Asahikawa. Located in Mihonrin forest which is one of the most important setting place in her novel Hyouten, this museum explains about her works, its base story and her life.

Not only Mihonrin forest, this city has a lot of nature. Asahikawa is surrounded by the Taisetsuzan mountain range, and it has two big parks which has a forest. These parks are relaxation spots for residents of Asahikawa. Also, this city has many rivers. The biggest four are the Isikari river, the Cyubetsu river, the Biei river, and the Usyubetsu river. Water from these rivers is used to make foods, sweets, or used as agricultural use, such as to make rice.

Besides from spots I wrote here, there are many places which are great to visit. Any people ~ from old to young, men and women~ can enjoy this city. Why don’t you come and visit some of these?

Analysis of TV Channels in Tokyo

TVs are one of the things that give us a lot of information and entertain us. On this paper, I want to tell about the TV channels, or in another word, TV broadcasting companies.

In Japan, however, there are many TV broadcasting companies such as CATV or many local TV broadcasting companies. If I wrote all of those companies, it takes too long. Because of this reason, I’ll write about TV broadcasting companies in Tokyo, not including CATV.

First broadcasting company is NHK, but to tell the truth, this is not a company. It is a public broadcasting station like BBC in United Kingdom. This station started radio broadcasting in Tokyo in 1925, started TV broadcasting which is now called NHK general in 1953, FM radio broadcasting in 1957, and NHK-education TV in 1959. NHK is paid for by receiving fees. The Broadcast Law provides that any person who has a TV set that can watch NHK broadcasting shall conclude a contract with NHK, and that NHK's annual budget shall be said it is acceptable by the Diet.

Secondly, I’ll write about Nippon Television. Nippon Television - or Nippon Television Network Corporation - is a TV company which stated broadcasting in August 28, 1953. This company is the oldest TV broadcasting company in Japan. The main office and main studio is located at Siodome area of Tokyo. Also, this company has connections with Studio Ghibli, led by Hayao Miyazaki, and holds the exclusive rights to broadcast their animation movies.

Thirdly, I’ll write about TBS. TBS or Tokyo Broadcasting System ,Inc is a company which stated broadcasting in 1955. This company is called as “Video Dramas’ TBS” because they make many kinds of dramas. Also it is known as a TV broadcasting company which broadcasts Kagayaku Nippon Record Taishou, or Japan Record Award in English as a TV program of the New Year’s Eve. This network is also a home to the many Ultraman series.

Next is Fuji TV. Fuji TV, or Fuji Television Network, Inc. is a TV station which started broadcasting in 1959. This company is also known as its dramas, and they are called “getsu-ku” because of the stating time – 21:00 on Monday – or the special dramas such as Furuhata Ninzaburo series.

There is another TV broadcasting company called TV Asahi. This company was founded as NET in 1957 and started broadcasting in 1959. This company is famous of its news programs such as Houdou Station, Super J Channel and Wide! Scramble.

Finally, I’ll write about TV Tokyo. This company is opened in 1964. Their strong point is the animation programs, and economics programs. They broadcast animations not only in prime time for the kids but also late-night for hard-core nerds. For example, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Naruto, and Pokemon series.

As I wrote here, there are a lot of TV channels you can watch in Tokyo. Each companies has its own strong points. Which channel will you watch when you watch TV next time?

Types Of Computer Software-Final Draft-

Final Draft
Katsuki Fujiuchi
Types Of Computer Software

A computer is one of the machines used by many people of many ages all over the world. Since computers are developing even today because of the opinions about what users want, there are many types of software sold by many companies. In addition, each type is very distinctive and has originality. Therefore, it is getting harder and harder to put them into one word “Computer Software.” Computer software can be classified on the basis of the purposes of use.
The first one is used for typing. These are called “Word Processing Software.” Microsoft Word is one of the famous things, but in Japan Ichitaro is also used. What are the differences between them? Microsoft word was first sold in May 1987 as Multi-tool Word. That was used all over the world, but it had problems when typing Japanese sentences. The reason is because Japanese is often written vertically, and the language which is used in the place where that company was located – that is the United States and the language is English – is not written vertically. Ichitaro, however, is produced in a company which is located in Japan and called Just Systems as software used in their word processor.

Another type of software is good at doing calculations. One of it is called Spreadsheet, and probably the most famous one is Microsoft Excel. This can do many calculations, and in addition, it is also good at making charts and graphs. However, the Japanese version has problems about memorizing dates. The Japanese version of Wikipedia said “If you type 01.09.18 by using after 2000 edition of it, it will memorize as September 18, 2001. However, if you type the same thing by using 98 edition and the ones sold before that, it will be memorized as September 18, 1989 because that date is September 18 of the first year of Heisei.”
The last one is for making data for presentations. That is called Presentation software, and one of it is Microsoft Power Point. This can put in words, pictures, graphs and more. However, some people do not feel good about relying on it. It is a waste of resource, says Katsuaki Watanabe, President of Toyota Motors.

There is a large amount of Computer software. All these types written on this paper are just some of it. Users should decide which one to use depending on their needs. Also, they must think about resources and if he or she can reduce it by using another type of software, they should do so.

“Hokkaido Bank Produces 100-Million-Yen Lottery Winners Again This Year.” The Hokkaido Shimbun Press 8 January 2009
http://www.hokkaido-np.co.jp/news/english/139439.html?_nva=40

Written Summary:
According to this article, The Hokkaido Bank announced on the 7th that its popular fixed deposit accounts that come complete with Year-end Jumbo Lottery tickets have produced 100-million-yen in prizewinning tickets. This is the third consecutive occasion that the fixed deposit accounts have produced prizewinning tickets worth 100 million yen or more, with a total of 300 million yen in prize-money in the 2007 Year-end Jumbo Lottery and another 300 million yen in the 2008 Summer Jumbo Lottery.
A batch of ten consecutive Year-end or Summer Jumbo Lottery tickets for every 2 million yen deposited into the account are sent to the account holders’ homes when the account matures (currently a 5-year period). This time approximately 687,000 tickets worth a total of 206 million yen were sent.
According to the Hokkaido Bank, the accounts produced one 3rd-prize ticket (5 million yen), forty-six 4th-prize tickets (100,000 yen) and seven tickets with 1st-prize numbers but with different group numbers (100,000 yen). There were also four winners of the Thanksgiving Prize (1 million yen), which was established to commemorate the Year-end Jumbo Lottery ’s 30th anniversary.
Hokkaido Bank is surprised that there are probably no other cases in which multi-millionaires have been produced on three consecutive occasions. The bank is calling for account holders to check their lottery ticket numbers.

Opinion Statements:
I think it is a very unique idea to give a lottery for their customer. Maybe I’ll change my bank account because the bank which I use is inconvenient in my hometown.

Questions:
1. Have you ever won a lottery? How many times?
2. Which bank do you use often?
3. What kind of lottery do you like the best?

Words
1.deposit「預金する」 2. account 「預金口座」 3. consecutive 「(一定順序で)連続した」
4. lottery 「宝くじ、くじ引き」5.offering「提供」

Hardy, Thomas. Tess of the d'Urbervilles. 9. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1995. (First Published: 1891) 119 pages

Responding to the plot:
If I were a character in the story, -for example, Tess- I can’t live like her. I think I would not go to such a far place. In addition, if I were Alec, I won’t chase Tess as that much. This answer will be the same answer as the question, “If I was the author, what would you done differently?”
In page 118, where Tess gets death penalty by killing Alec, she says “I am ready.” I think this word tells the pureness of Tess.

Setting:
This story took place in the United Kingdom. It starts from the end of May in the late 1880’s.

Point of view:
I think this story is told from the third person. The sentences written are like I’m watching a movie.
Conflict:
I think this is in conflict between a woman versus her environment and other people. That means Tess is fighting against Alec, and her life.

Climax:
I think the climax of this story is where Tess kills Alec. It was very shocking to me.

Symbol:
I think this story’s symbol is Tess herself. This is the stoy of her life.

Irony:
I think the most ironic part of this story is the part that Tess kills Alec. Before that, she was a pure girl.

Themes:
I think this story’s theme is “People’s Life”. I think the writer wanted to tell about that by using Tess.

Reflecting On The Story
There were two things that were shocking to me. First one was that she had to born a baby of Alec when she was 17 years old, and second is that Angel wasn’t a real “Angel”- he was just a pretender.- I found their life is different from mine. Therefore, I think that their environment is different from mine. If this turned into a film, I think that the number of the place she went will be fewer, or if I was a director of this film, I would divide this story and make it as 2 or 3 - maybe more - episodes.
I think the author wrote this because of his life. Wikipedia said that he got marry two times. I agree with the author’s view of people’s life because I think there are many pretenders around us. What I learned from this story was that people men betray women so easily. I think how I think about the male of human changed after reading this story. However, I didn’t expect that Tess will kill Alec at last.

Dickens, Charles. A Tale Of Two Cities, Harmondsworth, Middlesex, England: Penguin Books 1991 (first published in 1859), 93 pages

Responding to the plot:
If I were in the story, I would make the story different by not going to London but to the farther place. I say so because of the real reason Charles went back to France. He was deceived because he was a French noble. If he was not at London which is near from Paris, that information took a long time to be known by him and he wouldn’t go back there. I can say the same thing to the question “What would I change if I was the author?”

In the page 37, Lucie says “Are you ill, Mr. Carton? ” I think that word shows the personality of her.

Setting:
This story takes place at two cities. These are London and Paris. Also the year starts from 1775.

Point of view:
This story is written by the third person’s view. There are sentences which are able to know what the characters are thinking, but these are by what the characters said.

Conflict:
I think there are two conflicts in this story. Firstly there is a conflict between Charles and his position as a noble. Secondly, there is a conflict between Sydney and Charles – which can marry Lucie.

Climax:
I think the climax of this story is the part which Sydney gets death penalty instead of Charles. He gets it so as not to make Lucie sad.

Symbol:
The symbol of this story is the position of Charles. He was a noble.

Irony:
This story’s irony is the part which Sydney gets death penalty instead of Charles. I can’t do such a thing if I were at Sydney’s place.

Themes:
I think themes of this story are about the position in the social life. The three main characters’ positions are noble, barrister, and a daughter of the Doctor.

Reflecting On The Story
I found that the climax part is very surprising. As I wrote before, I can’t do such a thing if I was Sydney. Also, the characters life is different from mine. In addition, environment is different, too comparing to my country. Besides, if I make this story to a film, I will make it as more love story.

I think the reason why he wrote this story is because of his love. Wikipedia said that “Some have argued that in Tale Dickens reflects on his recently begun affair with eighteen-year-old actress Ellen Ternan.” I agree with his opinion because sometimes, we get estimation by social position. I learned it is important to help people even if that one is a competitor of me. That is also what I learned from the book. And that thing is also what I got surprised what it really happened and what I expect to happen.

Dickens, Charles. Oliver Twist, Edinburgh Gate, Harlow, Essex, England : Pearson Education Limited, 1999 ( first published in the Bridge Series 1962)

Summary:
Oliver was born at the workshop where it was about 75 miles away from London. The reason why he was born at there was because his mother was found lying in the street when she was traveling and taken by someone to there. Her mother left some accessories and died. These accessories was taken care by the old lady who was at the place where she – Oliver’s mother – died.

Oliver was named by Mr. Bumble, who is the beadle – kind of an officer at the church - of that area. His last name “Twist” was named “Twist” because the kids who named before him started from a letter “S”. Then, they gave a notice which says that they will give £10 whoever knows about him. But, it didn’t work. Therefore, he was sent to the baby farm. When he was nine years old, he went to the workhouse where his mother died.

At there, he was given very little meal. Other children at there were the same. That is the reason they decided to pick someone to request for another dish, and Oliver was chosen. When he asked for more foods, the peoples – adults – in the workhouse confined Oliver, and they gave an offer says that they give five pounds whoever wants Oliver for apprentice.

The chimney sweeper came first, but he had some bad reputation, so Mr. Sowerberry, an undertaker, took him. He took Oliver to funeral of every child because his face looked sad. Noah, who is the senior of him, didn’t like that situation, and bullied Oliver. Oliver gets angry at him, and he hits Noah. He was put into the basement by Mrs. Sowerberry. One night, Mr. Sowerberry helped Oliver to get out from there and work again with him. But Oliver didn’t work with him. Instead, he went to London.

At there, he meets Artful Dodger, whose real name is Jack Dawkins, a boy who did criminals. He recommended a place where Oliver can stay. That was a place of Bob Fagin, a man who was the reader of all of the bad boys. The next morning, he learned how to “work” and some games to play. Several days after, he went to “work”. It was too late that when he knew what he was doing was a robbery, he had to run all over London city, and arrested by the police. At the place of his judgment, he was saved by Mr. Brownlow. He lived with him. Mr. Brownlow and Mrs. Bedwin, who works at his house, got surprised because Oliver’s face looked alike as the woman in the picture at the house.

When he recovered, Mr. Brownlow gave money to Oliver to go and pay for the book that Mr. Brownlow bought. Mr. Grimwig, his friend, said that he couldn’t believe children and therefore, let’s bet about this. Unfortunately, this estimate – that Oliver will not come back – proved right. Fagin was searching for Oliver and his gang, Nancy caught him.

Oliver was confined into a house located at the eastern London. He was put into a member of the robbery. When he did with other members, he was shot his arms. One of his member, Bill Sikes, left him at the road and went away.

Mr. Brownlow gave a notice saying he will give money whoever knows information about Oliver. This notice was caught in sight of Mr. Bumble, who came to London. He met Mr. Brownlow and told him how bad Oliver is, and showed some papers. Mr. Brownlow gets disappointed. But, about from this chapter, mystery about Oliver gets solved little by little.

Meanwhile, the old lady who was at the scene of the Oliver’s birth gets into a condition which she will almost die, and told Mrs. Coney, the woman at the “baby farm” that Oliver’s mother stole something before she came to the workshop. The old lady couldn’t tell what Oliver’s mother stole. But then, Monks, a mysterious man came to visit Fagin. He told Fagin to make Oliver as a bad boy, but not to kill him.

Changing the story, Oliver, who was left by Bill, went to a house for help. Mrs. Maylie and her adopted child Rose told him to get in. The story about Oliver himself gave sympathy to them, and to the police investigation, their friend, Mr. Losberne, helped him. When Oliver recovered, he went to search Mr. Brownlow, but he already went to the West Indies with Mr. Grimwig and Mrs. Bedwin. Oliver couldn’t meet and tell why he had gone away to them. After a while, when it gets warm, they went to cottage in the country. At there, Rose got sick and she gets to the situation which she nearly die. When she recovered miraculously, Mrs. Maylie’s son, Harry came. He loves Mary. Mrs. Maylie, however, had some doubt about Rose’s background. One day, when Harry proposed his heart, Rose said that she has blemish on her name, so she does not want to sully him.

Mr. Bumble quit his job as a beadle, merry with Mrs. Corney, and became a leader of the workshop. But he was ruled by her. He went to the pub to blow his steam off. At there, he met Monks. He told that he want to meet the old lady who saw Oliver’s mother die. Mr. Bumble told that the old lady died, but when he thought that he can get some money, he suggested Monks to meet his wife. Mrs. Bumble told that she has a bag which contains a gold locket and a gold ring. When he gets that, he throw it into the river to hide them. Then, he went to London to meet Fagin and told his plan to plunge Oliver. But Nancy was listening to it, and decided to tell all to Rose. She told that the things that tells about Oliver’s background has thrown away, his property will be Monks’ one, If he was set up to be a robbery and if he was judged as death penalty, the will of his mother will not make sense, and Monks is Oliver’s brother.

Rose thanked Nancy, and wanted to give her some money. But, Rose refused, and she only told Rose where to meet again. On the day they promised, Nancy couldn’t get out because she couldn’t get permission from Bill Sikes. She gets frustrated. Fagin saw that, and he thought that there might be something, so he put her person to watch her. One week after, when she went out in the midnight, the watch followed her. Bill heard Story from Fagin, and he killed Nancy when she came back. After that, he left the place they hide. Police pursed after him, and to escape, he jumped into the river but he tied rope to his neck by miss, and he died.

Monks was arrested. Due to the research of Mr. Brownlow, they found Monks is Oliver’s brother, Rose is his aunt, and Mr. Brownlow is his father’s friend.

Fagin was also arrested, and he was executed. Harry married
Rose and became priest. Monks went to the U.S. but, at there, he did bad things again, and he died at the jail. Oliver became adopted child of Mr. Brownlow, and lived happily ever after.

Setting: England, United Kingdom, 19 century.

Point of view: Omniscient

Conflict: Oliver versus his environment – that he lives poor -

Climax: Chapter 49, when Monks turned out to be Oliver’s brother, Rose was his mother’s sister and Mr. Brownlow was his father’s friend.

Symbol: I think his situation stands for the poorness of the working class of the industrial revolution – it started from the Great Britain - .

Irony: When the boy who recommended a good place to stay was a one of the members of robbery group. Also the climax point was another irony.

Evaluation: I think that if I was Oliver, I can’t live like him – to fight against his situation –. That is why Oliver is one of my hero – soneone to respect - for me.

An Apology-2

I compleatly forgot of Coming-Of-Age Ceremony because I'll do it next year!! The reason I do so is because I was born in March, and one of who is called haya-umare(早生まれ) in Japanese!!lol.

Anyway, some do the ceremony on 1/11. Therefore, it is almost inpossible for everyone to vote on 1/11 12:00pm!!

I'll postpone the deadline of the vote for Kohaku. A new deadline will be 1/12 18:oo(JST).

Also, please vote your votes on the comments of either 24-1, 24-2, 24-3, or 24-4.

BTW, to be frank, I don't want to attend the ceremony. The reasons are not only Hokkaido is far form here but also because I don't want to meet people who I know.

Well, there are some I want to meet. For example, Nagu-san and Yuri. They are from my Middle school days.

However, there are a lot of number I don't want to meet because some of my classmate in High school told me that "How come you can go to AGU as you are such a fool person?" and the like. One of my classmate even said to me, "If you can go to AGU, I can go to Meiji Univ. or Chuo Univ. in full marks!!"

How was your Coming-Of-Age Ceremony? Did you attend it or not? If yes, why? If no, then why not?
