Types Of Computer Software (2nd)

A computer is one of the machines used by many people of many ages all over the world. Since computers are developing even today because of the opinions about what users want, there are many types of software sold by many companies, and each type is so distinctive and has originality. Therefore, it is getting harder and harder to put them into one word “Computer Software.” Computers Software can be classified on the basis of the purposes of use.
The first one is used for typing. These are called “Word Processing Software.” Microsoft Word is one of the famous things, but in Japan Ichitaro is also used. What are the differences between them? Microsoft word was first sold in May 1987 as Multi-tool Word. That was used all over the world, but it had problems when typing Japanese sentences. The reason is because Japanese is often written vertically, and the language which is used in the place where that company was located – that is the United States and the language is English – is not written vertically. Ichitaro, however, is produced in a company which is located in Japan and called Just Systems as software used in their word processor.

Another type of software is good at doing calculations. One of it is called Spreadsheet, and probably the most famous one is Microsoft Excel. This can do many calculations, and in addition, it is also good at making charts and graphs. However, the Japanese version has problems about memorizing dates. The Japanese version of Wikipedia said “If you type 01.09.18 by using after 2000 edition of it, it will memorize as September 18, 2001. However, if you type the same thing by using 98 edition and the ones sold before that, it will be memorized as September 18, 1989 because that date is September 18 of the first year of Heisei.”
The last one is for making data for presentations. That is called Presentation software, and one of it is Microsoft Power Point. This can put in words, pictures, graphs and more. However, some people do not feel good about relying on it. It is a waste of resource, says Katsuaki Watanabe, President of Toyota Motor.

There is a large amount of Computer software. All these types written on this paper are just some of it. Users should decide which one to use depending on their needs. Also, they must think about resources and if he or she can reduce it by using another type of software, they should do so.

Newspaper Discussion of 12/16

“Last Regular Run For Classic Train.” The Japan Times Online 1 December 2008
http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nn20081201a4.html

Written Summary:

According to this article, one of the first types of bullet train ran on its final regular run at Sunday, November 30, after running 44 years. About 2,000 train aficionados came to see off the 0 Series model, which has a round-nose. West Japan Railway Co. said that all reserved seats - that was 152 seats - were sold out on that train, and hundreds more flocked to the station for the 248 non-reserved seats.

Opinion Statements:

It is very sad that the oldest type of the bullet train won’t run regularly from now on. I think that West Japan Railway Co. should keep it in the way that it can run.

Questions:

1. Have you ever ridden on the bullet trains? How many times?
2. Which do you like better, normal trains or the bullet trains?
3. Are you an aficionado of something? If yes, please tell me more about it. If no, why not?

Words

1. bullet train「新幹線、弾丸列車」

2. aficionado 「ファン、こり屋、(闘牛の)熱愛者」

3. reserved seats 「指定席」

4. flock 「多数、一団、群れ」

5. non- reserved seats「自由席」
