Tobu Fun Festa

I went to Tobu Fun Festa today, which was held at near Minami-Kurihasi station in Saitama prefecture.

Extra train run because of this event, and many trainspotters - or I should say "train otakus" were taking pictures of it.

Like this,

and that,

and finally, this.

And, these are the pictures I took there.

I thought that it was really fun to know how trains move not only from the books and games but also from the people in the company.

These are some of the things I got at there.

Japanense Toungle Twister-1

Today's Toungle Twister is "Kuko Kyuko Kuko Yuki (空港急行空港行き)" which means "Airport Express bound for Airport."

I think the reason why this is difficult is because there are so many K's and U's and YU's.

But is there any Kuko Kyukos running in Japan? I thought Keikyu's one are called Airport Kaitoku and Tokyo monorails are Kuko Kaisoku.

“Boys’ Death Shows Choking Risk From Jelly” The Yomiuri Shimbun 1 October 2008 : 2

Written Summary:

According to this article, officials from the National Consumer Affairs Center said that the reason why a 21-month-old boy from Hyogo prefecture died was because of the jelly containing konnyaku. The similar case happened in 1996.

The center says that many konnyaku jelly products are made to be easy to swallow or packaged in bite-size. Also, they said that konnyaku jelly is firmer and more elastic than normal jelly, especially when it is frozen.

Many manufactures of konnyaku jelly have already taken measures to these problems by making smaller, easier to chew products.

New Words:
1: affairs ~ public/political activities
2: choking ~ unable to breathe because something is in your throat or there is not enough air
3: manufacturers ~ a company that makes large amount of goods.
4: firmer ~ not completely hard, but not soft.
5: elastic ~ can stretch and then go back to its usual length or size.

Questions:
1: Do you like konnyaku jelly?
2: Which do you like better, konnyaku jelly or normal jelly?
3: What kind of food do you like the best?

Research about Thomas Edison

Thomas Edison is an inventor from the United States. But surprisingly, he is also a telegrapher. It is said that their ancestor is from Holland, but we don’t know the reason why they moved to America.

Thomas’ father, Samuel and his mother, Nancy marry at 1828, and Thomas was born at February 11, 1847 as their seventh and last children. His name, Thomas, was named from his uncle.

He was a very curious boy and he tried many things and failed when he was a child. For example, he tried to build a bridge and fall into the canal. He even tried to watch how the fire burns, and made a fire accident. Although, he wasn’t a bad boy – he was just curious. He asked many things to the grown-ups – not only his family but also the adults passing by - . Most of the adults avoid him, but only his mother didn’t. He also did many experiments. One day, he even tried to hatch the chicks by warming their eggs by his body.

When he was eight, he went to school. As soon as he went to school, however, he quit it because his teacher said to him that he is crazy. There is a famous episode that he asked why 1+1=2. Thomas already knew that in this world, there is a lot of thing that it does not become two. For example, if you hit a dish with another dish, it breaks into a lot of pieces. After that, his mother, who used to be a teacher, taught him. When he was twelve, he started to sell newspaper in the train. And when he was fifteen, he became a telegrapher. When he was working at Western-Union telegraph office, he invented mousetrap using electricity.

On December 25, 1871, Edison married 16-year-old Mary Stilwell, whom he had met two months earlier. They had three children: Marion Estelle Edison, nicknamed "Dot", Thomas Alva Edison Jr., nicknamed "Dash" and William Leslie Edison. Mary Edison died on August 9, 1884.
On February 24, 1886, at the age of thirty nine, Edison married 20-year-old Mina Miller. They also had three children: Madeleine Edison, Charles Edison, and Theodore Miller Edison. Mina outlived Thomas Edison, dying on August 24, 1947.
Thomas Edison began his career as an inventor in Newark, New Jersey, with the automatic repeater and his other improved telegraphic devices, but the invention which first gained him fame was the phonograph in 1877. This accomplishment was so unexpected that it is said by the people that it is almost magical. Edison became known as "The Wizard of Menlo Park," New Jersey, where he lived. Two years later, he made light bulb, and in 1880, he made generator. He also made movie watching machine in 1889, and a toaster in1910.

At October 18, 1931, he died in the age of 84.

The Place I Would Like to Explore

The place which I chose to explore is New Zealand. The reason I chose there is because it has lot of natures, and recently, it became one of the location place of the movies.

These are some of the information about New Zealand which I got from the internet. In New Zealand, 4,107,000 people lives in the area of 270,534 square kilometers, or that will be 104,454 square miles. The capital of this City is Wellington. The languages which are commonly used in New Zealand are English and Maori. Main Religions are Protestant and Roman Catholic, and the life expectancy is 78 years old.

Next, I want to tell about the economy of New Zealand. The main industries are food processing, wood and paper products, textiles and machinery. The agricultural things that are famous are wheat, barley, potatoes, pulses; wool and fish. The main things which they export are dairy products, meat, wood and wood products, fish, chemicals, wool and mutton.

“Osaka Says Good-Bye to Iconic Crown Taro.” The Yomiuri Shimbun 9 July 2008 : 5

Written Summary:
According to this article, the mechanical crown Cui-daore Taro and his younger brother Cui-daore Jiro, the landmark of the Cui-daore, one of the famous restaurants in Osaka, received a fond of farewell on Tuesday, July 8 due to the closing of Cui-daore. Even though the weather was wet, a large amount came to dine at the restaurant and to take pictures of these clowns. Because of the closing of the famous restaurant, this boom has generated nearly 900 million yen and resulted in a boost of more than 316 million yen.

Opinion Statements:
It is sad that the famous place was closed but I think both landmarks are happy to receive farewells from so many people.

Questions:
1. Have you ever been to Osaka before? How many times? What did you do there?

2. Do you have any recommendation of the restaurants, fast-food shops, or food stands? – Either at your hometown or where you live now? –

3. What is your favorite food?

“2 Officials Found Guilty over Girls Pool Death.” The Yomiuri Shimbun 28 May 2008 : 2

Written Summary:
According to this article, the Saitama District Court said to two officials that they are guilty because of the death of a girl who stuck into a pipe at the pool which was under their management in July 2006. The judgment said that they forgot to check the cover was attached to the pipe before they open the pool in summer 2006, even though the manual said they have to do it. Also, they failed to tell a company subcontracted by the municipal government to check the pipe. As a result, the girl was stuck into the pipe and she died. That is why one has to go in jail for one and a half years and another one has to go there for one years. The two officials have admitted the charges, and their lawyers also admitted. However, the lawyers are saying that subcontracted company should also share the responsibility for the accident with the municipal governments.

Opinion Statements:
In my opinion, I think the judgment was appropriate because of its influence of this accident.

Questions:
1. Do you like swimming? Why or why not?

2. Do you do something not to forget a thing? For example, write it down on your memo? If yes, please tell me more about it. If no, then why not?

3. Have you ever been to the police box or police department? When was it and why?

Coooold!

I heard that in some parts of Kyusyu - near Fukuoka, I think - it was snowy today.

Also, the weather forcast says that in Sapporo, it will snow until this weekend.

What I really want to say today is that I hate snow and cold days, even though I'm from Hokkaido. I feel weary when I hear someone is talking about snow. The reason I think so is because I had to clear the snow in front of my house when I was in my hometown. Even though snow in Hokkaido weighs much lighter than the snows fell in Honshyu because Honsyu's snow is sticky but Hokkaido's one aren't, but it is still a tough work.
Also, does somebody knows where I can buy a long-sleeves T-shirts? I'm loooking for it, but I can't find it anywhere. Maybe I have to go to UNIQLO at Machida or Aobadai this weekend to get some of these. Or maybe outlet malls at near Hashimoto station - Minami-Osawa, I think - .

November 18 (today) is a special day!

The reason why I say so is because today is "Ii-Yukimi-Daihukuno hi (いい雪見だいふくの日)" in Japan. Yukimi-Daihuku is an ice cream sold in Japan which shape is like a Daihuku rice cake.

Then why today? It is because Yukimi -Daihuku contains two ice creams and a toothpick to eat it. When you look it from the top, it looks like 18. That is why today is the day.

“Japanese Schoolgirl Drafted By Pro Team.” Daily Yomiuri Online 17 November 2008

Written Summary:
According to this article, a 16-years-old high school student, Eri Yoshida, is going to play as a professional player. She is going to play in a new team called Kobe 9 Cruise, which is one of the teams that will join new baseball league starting in April. She is good at throwing knuckle ball, and she says that she wants to throw balls like Tim Wakefield, who is a pitcher of the Boston Red Sox and has built a successful major league career throwing it.

Opinion Statements:
I think this girl gave (dreams to - I forgot to tipe in -) many girls in Japan, because in Japan, baseball used to be one of the sports which boys do, and girls who wanted to play baseball played softball unwillingly.

Questions:
1. What do you think of girls playing baseball?
2. Have you ever got any kinds of tryouts or auditions?
3. What is your favorite sport?

Words
1. Pitch ≒ throw 2. Conference 「会議、評議会」 3. Achieved 「獲得する」 4. Tryout 「(選手)適性試験」 5. Draft 「ドラフト制度、ドラフト会議」

The Words That Moved My Heart-4

This time, I want to introduce this word. "Dialect is an accessory of words. You can take off, but you may not throw it away."

I heard that it was said in one of the famous Japanese animation, but I forgot which animation it was. Does someone remembers which story and caractor said that? And if you know, who is the voice actor ( or actress) ? If you can, please write about that on the comments.

Talking about dialect, sometimes, if we don't pay attention, we sometimes use that words. For example, "Throw away trash." in Japanese is "Gomi wo suteru.(ゴミを捨てる)" However, in my home prefecture - that is Hokkaido - we use "Gomi wo nageru.(ゴミをなげる)" I always have problem with it because if we say the words " Gomi wo nageru" in common Japanese, it sounds like you are thowing trash wherever you want. I always get embarrased about it. But, this tells us that we dont have to get ashamed of using dialects.

By the way, I was so surprised that our IE-W teacher, Mr. Anderson, knew the word "Dosanko" , which means "Someone born in Hokkaido." The reason I felt so is because I thought that most of the people who lives in Honshyu doesn't know this word.

IE-W 2 "Differences Between Hokkaido and Tokyo"

Hokkaido and Tokyo are the prefecture located in Japan. But, to tell the truth, Tokyo is Metropolis and Hokkaido isn’t prefecture but an area which is called Hokkaido. These two areas have a lot of differences. I will explain some of it.

Probably one of the biggest differences are the square measures. Hokkaido has a surface of 83,452.28 square kilometers. That includes the area which is occupied by Russia and called “Hoppo- Ryoudo” in Japanese. It is the biggest prefecture in Japan. However, Tokyo has 2186.84 square kilometers and it is the second smallest prefecture in Japan.

Also, Hokkaido has many natures. Not only the places such as the Toyako Lake which is going to be a place where summit will be held - it was held during this summer- and Kushiro-Shitsugen marshland which is protected by the Ramsar treaty, but there are a lot of huge farmlands or rice fields. In farmlands, there are many milking cows whose milk will be drinkable milk or the materials of dairy products such as butters and yoghurt, and rice which made in there are sold in many other places in Japan. Tokyo does have natures such as the suburbs of Hachiohji city - lake Okutama, as an example - or island areas such as Izu islands and Ogasawara islands, but not so much as Hokkaido. Instead, there are many man-made things such as tall buildings. For example, Tokyo tower, Roppongi hills, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office and many railway lines, not only the JR lines but also private railroad lines, such as Tokyu, Seibu, Tobu, Keikyu, Keisei, Keio, Odakyu and more.

Weathers are different, too. In Tokyo, snowy days are less than Hokkaido and usually, snow melts in two or three days. In Hokkaido, however, there is a lot of snow that we have to shovel , and because of that, there are festivals using snow. Probably one of the famous festivals is the snow festival in Sapporo, but there are many other cities and towns which hold such kind of festivals. Tokyo also holds festivals too, such as sanzya-matsuri festival which is held in Asakusa. But, these festivals are more for the shrines.

There are many other differences between both two prefectures. From the time when Ieyasu Tokugawa built his and his families’ castle in Tokyo, this place has been developing as a place where dispatches new Japanese culture. Hokkaido used to be a place where Ainu peoples lived, but when the Japanese government and many other Japanese started to exploit Hokkaido about 100 years ago, their cultures have been lost for many years. However, recently, it has been looked over again.

As for the lack of papers - or I should say space -, I could not write many differences. But, I think that I could tell some of them. I hope many people get interested in the differences of these two areas.
